One Hundred Thousand Sunsets

I measure my life by sunsets,

When the sun dips down, I live again.

Tonight the sea is calm.

There is a stairway to the setting sun,

Shortening, minute by minute.

I remember many rough nights,

Wild seas, screams of distress.

Rescued sailors, shouting their thanks to me,

Their beacon of hope.

When the night comes now,

I am no longer of use.

I stand, stoic, alone, neglected.

I keep watch in the dark,

My light may return.

I am retired, enjoy reading, writing and painting watercolours. I keep a curious outlook on life. Remember the past. Live in the present. Welcome the future
